“In Bacon and Beer We Trust” by Chase Kunz (on Twitter @SpoonsKunz) Happy Tuesday, all! I opened my fridge today and saw a few pieces of crispy leftover bacon for my breakfast and felt inspired. Rogue Voodoo Doughnut Maple Bacon Ale Review

Voodoo Doughnut Maple Bacon Ale is not for the faint of heart (or palate). This is one serious brew, full flavored, full force aroma, intense aftertaste.

I was first drawn to both the Pepto Bismol colored bottle and the word “bacon.” Not too often do we see bacon in brews and more importantly, this is the first brew that I have tasted ACTUAL bacon, versus the more common liquid smoke.

I found the bottle at Applejack’s in Wheatridge, CO, brought it to the top of Lookout Mountain and watched the city lights while tasting this intense beer.

Your first and most lingering smell is maple syrup, like you’re about to eat pancakes in Vermont. The taste goes from meaty, to bacon, to meaty aftertaste. I thought I might be drinking liquified summer sausage that is the consistency of a porter.

I enjoyed the light mouthfeel, as I feel that the meaty taste paired with a heavy feel would be more intense (what IS more intense than intense anyway?!).

Overall, I am glad that I tried it. Glad that I shared it. 6 ounces was enough for me and now I am searching for beer-baking recipes to use the rest of the bottle. Guess I need to make more adventurous, meat-bacon loving friends. Thanks for being willing to try this Dr. B and Jill O!
