On this day in 1888, Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh cut off his left ear. One story suggests that van Gogh cuts his ear off with a razor blade after a fight with a friend, Paul Gauguin, and presented it to a prostitute. He then went home and nearly bled to death before police found him in his blood-soaked bed. Another story presented is that Gauguin cut off van Gogh’s ear in a heated fencing match. It appears that a love affair may be to blame for this one. Hmm….
