On this day in 1817, New York City debuts its first sword swallowing performance in the United States by India’s Senaa Samma. A report from that time states, “Senaa Samma appeared at St. John’s Hall in New York City in a lovely exhibition of juggling and sword swallowing. Admission to see the performance was $1 for adults.”
Almost two centuries have passed, and we are still amazed by these bizarre and dangerous feats. We are so mesmerized that we even pay tribute to the unusual skill on beer labels!
Schmaltz Brewing Company of New York created the Coney Island Sword Swallower Steel Hop Lager. This beer is considered an “IPA brewed with lager yeast” and is just one of the four Coney Island Lager series.
