On this day in 2005, the first day of Oktoberfest began. Oktoberfest is a 16-day festival, in Munich, celebrating the 1810 Wedding of Bavaria’s Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese of Sachsen-Hildburghausen. The town gathered for the wedding and chose to recreate the event each year thereafter. Oktoberfest now begins in late September and continues through the first Sunday in October.
“Oktoberfest beer is also known as “Maerzen,” or March beer. Traditionally, Maerzen was brewed in March, stored (or lagered) in cool beer caves through the summer, and served in the fall” (Kerry Byrne, Epicurious). It is said that more than 1 million gallons of beer are served at the largest food and beer festival in the world!
