On this day in 1934, Seattle brewery drivers found themselves at odds with choosing between joining the Teamsters’ Beer Delivery Union and the non-Teamster Union.
The Teamsters retaliated by smashing beer cases, beating delivery drivers, looting beer carts, and boycotting breweries that carried certain brands of beer.
The Teamsters tried to get the drivers to strike against long hours and low wages, but none of the breweries would budge. The strike ended in a few days. Today, brewers and drivers still work long hours for little pay and Seattle has the best protesters*.
