On this day in 1917, “brewers and publicans acclaimed alike from the housetops that ‘good beer is good food.’ Some asserted that beer was liquid bread.” However, what we think of today as traditional Mild and Bitter Ales were pushed aside in favor for “Government Ale,” like a lighter, cheaper version of English Ale. Aren’t we glad we can make our own choices and our own ales nowadays?
